When a large number of people were fleeing the killer tsunami that wreaked havoc in the Car Nicobar Island and other coastal areas in India, an army jawan, unmindful of his own safety, rescued as many as 10 children.

Pradeep Kharab, posted at the Air Force police office in Car Nicobar Island, also rescued his colleague's pregnant wife.

Kharab, who arrived at his native village Tharu in Sonepat district on Tuesday, said he and his family were sleeping when the wild sea waves hit their residential colony.

He, along with wife and two children, tried to get to safety on their motorcycle, but were trapped by the waves.

His wife, Neelam, and four-year-old son Kunal were swept away by the waves, even as he, along with his elder son Mukul (7), managed to reach a safe place. He then jumped into the sea to save his wife and son but could not do so.

He, however, rescued 10 children, sustaining injuries on his head and foot in the process, as iron rods flowing in the tidal waves hit him. He handed over the children to an unidentified man.

The tale ended on a happy note when he later found Neelam and Kunal in a hospital.
