Fog engulfed most parts of north India on Monday, throwing air and rail traffic out of gear and causing two road accidents in which 17 people were killed.

The cold wave in Uttar Pradesh claimed two more lives taking the toll in the state this season to 67.

Fourteen people were killed in a collision between two buses at Fategarh Sahab in Punjab due to poor visibility.

Minimum temperatures at most places in Punjab and Haryana witnessed a slight increase.

While Amritsar continued to be the coldest at 2.4° C, mercury ranged between 8° C and 9° C in Chandigarh, Hisar, Karnal and Ambala.

Slippery conditions on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway due to incessant rains and snowfall claimed the lives of three Border Roads Organisation personnel when the van in which they were travelling skidded off and fell into a nullah near Banthal.

The 300 km highway, closed on Sunday evening due to snowfall, was reopened on Monday.

Icy winds blowing across Kashmir showed little signs of abating.
