Strong aftershocks continued to rock the region from Sumatra to Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Friday with the Indian Meteorological Department stating that 75 such tremors have been recorded since the December 26 earthquake.
A moderate aftershock measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale was recorded at 1735 IST in the Great Nicobar region, with the epicenter at latitude 6.5 degrees north and Longitude at 92.9 degrees east.
Earlier four quakes, measuring over 5.0 were felt in the region on Friday, the IMD said in Delhi.
A quake measuring 5.8 hit the Great Nicobar Islands at 0754 IST. Its epicenter was at 7.2 degree north latitude and 92.1 degree east longitude. It was preceded by two earthquakes measuring 5.5 and 5.2 at 0306 IST and 0435 IST respectively.
At 1629 IST, another temblor measuring 5.1 was recorded. Its epicentre was in the Andaman Sea at 8.2 degree north latitude and 95.8 degree east longitude.
Northern Sumatra also experienced an earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale at 0048 IST. Another moderate intensity quake was recorded at 1912 IST off the west coast of Sumatra, the IMD said. The quake, measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale, was epicentered at 4.7 degrees north latitude and 95.2 degrees east longitude.
Meanwhile, an earthquake of slight intensity measuring 4.0 shook Jammu and Kashmir at 2235 IST on Thursday with the epicentre at 33.3 degree north latitude and 75.8 degree east longitude.
