US Senator Hillary Clinton, who is in India on a three-day private visit, met Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday in New Delhi.

New York-based Indian American hotelier Sant Chatwal, who is responsible for Hillary's India trip, did not divulge any details.

The senator is expected to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday.

The senator may also attend a dinner hosted by Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Friday.

External Affairs Minister K Natwar Singh, Finance Minister P Chidambaram, corporate honchos like Anil and Mukesh Ambani, Nusli Wadia, Rahul Bajaj, Azim Premji and Laxmi Mittal are among the 54 invited for the event.

Sources said Pawar, who has enjoyed the hospitality of Hillary and former president Bill Clinton, during his visits to the US, had a very cordial relationship with the former first family.

Reports said Natwar Singh would also host a dinner for Hillary on Saturday.

"This visit is mainly to consolidate her personal ties with India, apart from strengthening the bonds between the two great democracies," Chatwal was quoted as saying to a news website.

She is expected to do some shopping and visit the Taj Mahal in Agra.
