Siwan district authorities on Monday ordered that Rashtriya Janata Dal member of Parliament, Mohammed Shahabuddin, be detained in Beur jail till February 28 under the Bihar Control of Crime Act 1981.

Last Friday, the Patna high court had granted bail to Shahabuddin, who is charged with the 2001 abduction and murder of Communist Party of India-Marxist-Leninist leader Munna Choudhury.

"I held a court in Siwan on Monday and passed an order to detain Shahabuddin in judicial custody till February 28, when the election process would be complete," Siwan District Magistrate C K Anil, who is also the returning officer in the district, said.

Shahabuddin is being detained in judicial custody under Section 12 of the CCA to ensure free, fair and peaceful election in Bihar, Anil said.

Last Friday, hours after the Patna high court had granted bail to Shahabuddin, Anil had barred Shahabuddin from entering the district for one year.

Shahabuddin on Saturday filed a petition in the high court challenging the order. His lawyer claimed since Shahabuddin represented the people of Siwan in the Lok Sabha, the DM could not bar him from entering the district.
