Nine people, including seven engaged in snow clearing operations, were feared killed and 30 were trapped in several houses due to avalanches triggered by heavy snowfall, which hit mountainous areas in Jammu and Kashmir since Friday evening.
Army rescued 35 people, including eight women and seven children, in Doda district of Jammu region where an avalanche struck 15 houses in Kanderkote village on Saturday afternoon, defence sources said.
Thirty people were still trapped in the houses and efforts were on to rescue them, they said.
Two workers, engaged in road clearance, were buried in an avalanche on Kargil-Leh road in Ladakh region on Saturday morning.
Two were killed and three houses damaged in Bhulipora village in Anantnag district in an avalanche, the sources said.
Five workers involved in road clearance work, who went missing on Friday evening after a snow slide hit the Jawahar Tunnel on the Jammu-Srinagar highway, could not be traced and are presumed dead.
