Greeting cards made by children of tsunami-hit Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu netted Rs 8 lakh in 2005.

Rs 5 lakh of it was donated to an orphanage housing hundreds of children who lost their parents.

District Collector Dr J Radhakrishnan handed over a cheque for Rs 5 lakh to state Rural Development Secretary Shantha Sheela Nair on Friday for improvement of education facilities at the Annai Sathya orphanage.

Earlier, Nair inaugurated an exhibition of pictures and hoardings showing the rehabilitation work undertaken by the government and NGOs in 29 villages in the district where over 6,000 lives were claimed by the tsunami.

She visited various centres where the tsunami victims were being engaged in the manufacture of a variety of products and advised the victims to improve their economic condition.
