Meerut on Tuesday witnessed protests against the police after some police officials abused and beat up couples studying in the city's parks on Monday.

While students burnt effigies of policemen, Uttar Pradesh Women's Rights Commission has decided to probe the incident.

The students alleged that some boys and girls studying together were beaten up and abused by the police, including women constables, on Monday on the charge that they were having 'illicit affairs'.

The Uttar Pradesh Women's Rights Commission said in a statement that 'parks are meant for people to meet. There is no bar on girls and boys meeting'.

Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of Police Rajeev Ranjan Verma said he has ordered suspension of Inspector Malti Shrama and sub inspector Mamata Gautam and entrusted the inquiry to SP (Meerut rural area) Shiv Sagar Singh.
