Under heavy police protection, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi resumed its demolition drive against illegal constructions in the capital Monday.

In the wake of the violence witnessed in some areas Sunday against the action, additional police forces have been deployed for the security of MCD officials taking part in the drive and their vehicles, an MCD spokesman said.

Demolition has started in West Patel Nagar and Lajpat Nagar.

Meanwhile, the MCD officials are waiting for police cover to start demolitions in Rajouri Garden, Vikas Puri, Janak Puri, Green Park, Karol Bagh, Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, Narela and Najafgarh, MCD sources said.

The drive began on Saturday following a high court order for demolition of all illegal constructions inĀ Delhi within four weeks.

On Sunday, Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil held a meeting with Union Home Secretary V K Duggal, City Police Commissioner K K Paul and Delhi Chief Secretary S Reghunathan to assess the law and order situation in the national capital in view of the drive.

On the first day of the drive on Saturday, MCD had removed eight illegal structures and sealed an equal number of constructions.
