The wife of Naushad, the Keralite jailed in Saudi Arabia who would lose his eye if a court verdict there is carried out, Thursday met Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in Thiruvananthapuram and sought his intervention to save her husband.

Suhaila, who met Chandy at his office, was carrying her two year-old daughter Asna and accompanied her uncle and Punalur legislator P S Supal.

She later told reporters that the chief minister had assured that he would do everything possible to help Naushad.

Talking to reporters, Supal said the option of Naushad's wife submitting a mercy petition to the king of Saudi Arabia was being considered. This required the permission of the Saudi government, he said.

Supal said a memorandum signed by all the members of Parliament from Kerala was being submitted to the prime minister seeking his intervention in the matter.

Sources at the Chief Minister's Office said Chandy talked over phone to Union Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahamed, Prime Minister's Principal Secretary T K A Nair and Indian Ambassador in Iraq M O H Farooq Thursday.

Naushad, 33, hailing from Anchal in Kollam district, had been asked by a Shariat court in Saudi Arabia to give one eye to the person whose eye was damaged during a scuffle with him.
