Making it clear that it does not want any confrontation with the judiciary, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board on Sunday constituted a committee to frame a reply to a Supreme Court notice on a petition challenging existence of Islamic courts.
"There is no question of any conflict and confrontation. Whatever rights the Constitution has provided, the Darul Qazais (Islamic courts) are functioning under it," AIMPLB Assistant General Secretary Abdul Rehman Qureshi said.
"So far we have not received any notice from the Supreme Court. Whatever we have come to know is only through media.
We have discussed the issue and decided to give an appropriate reply to the apex court when we finally receive the notice," he said emerging from a special meeting of the board.
"We have constituted a committee to deal with the situation and frame our reply to the Supreme Court," Qureshi said emphasising that 'Darul Qazais' were nothing but civil courts dealing with only family issues and did not interfere in criminal cases including rape.
