Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has condemned as 'cowardly' the serial blasts that rocked the country on Wednesday, which claimed two lives, and said the attackers were enemies of mankind.

Zia, who is on a five-day visit to China, said the unprecedented attacks were a cowardly act perpetrated with an evil design to create panic in the country.

"I want to say that the attackers are enemies of the country, people, peace, humanity and democracy," BSS news agency quoted her as saying.

Over 400 small bombs, suspected to have been planted by a banned Islamic militant group, exploded near simultaneously in almost all Bangladeshi districts on Wednesday, killing two people, including a child, and injuring at least 140.

Police said 63 of Bangladesh's 64 districts were hit by the bombings, which occurred between 11 am and 11.30 am (local time), targeting government offices, courts and press clubs in the first such attack in this politically volatile south Asian country, prompting a security alert.
