Kalina, in northwest Mumbai, has been one of the worst affected areas. The rains have simply refused to give residents time to recover. Water here is still four-five feet high.
Kalina, Kurla and Santacruz are used to water-logging every monsoon as they are low lying, but this crisis comes thanks to blockage by buffalo carcasses at the drainage facility.
The Army and Navy has been pressed into rescue operations as many remain trapped.
Meanwhile, slum dwellers in the area have taken to the streets, protesting against the apathy of the government as they feel that all attention has been given to residents of the Indian Airlines and Air India colonies. Food, milk, water and other essentials are slowly reaching marooned areas.
