Water has receded from both Western and Eastern Express highways in Mumbai, and traffic has been restored after Sunday's heavy downpour, sources said. However, the situation continues to be grim in Virar in the far-flung western suburbs, parts of which report waist-deep water and no power for the last few days, apart from Kalini and Kurla.
Municipal authorities are busy clearing tonnes of garbage from various places and disinfecting the areas to avoid spread of epidemic, officials said.
Power supply was yet to be restored in places like Dahisar, Borivili and other suburbs in northeast and north, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) sources added. Water supply to most of localities has been restored, they added.
People, who were worst affected in low lying areas like Chembur, have moved to safer places, the police said.
The BMC officials have sent 65 of its 125 teams to check the health condition of people in various areas while insecticides have been sprayed in 892 localities out of the 1,174 locations identified for the purpose, the BMC control room said.
