A red alert has been announced and over 2,000 people living in low-lying areas along the Mutha and Mula river banks in Pune have been shifted as a precautionary measure owing to the controlled discharge of water from three dams around the city on Monday.
As rains continue unabated since Sunday, water from the three dams -- Khadakvasala, Mulshi and Pavana -- is being released and there is a possibility of the level of the Mutha river rising at some places in the city, Resident Deputy Collector Suhas Divse said.
"A red alert has been issued in the low-lying areas on the banks of both the rivers," Irrigation Department sources said.
Meanwhile, Pune Municipal Corporation's Deputy Commissioner Laxman Damse said they are releasing 35,000 cusecs of water from Khadakvasala dam, 30,000 cusecs from Mulshi dam and 5,500 cusecs from Pavana dam on Monday.
The water being released from the dams is a controlled discharge, the officials said adding, it is being released during the day instead of night to avoid panic among people.
