Death toll in Raigad 180, people of three villages shifted

Heavy rains continued to pound Raigad district of Maharashtra [ Images ] on Monday with authorities evacuating 800 people from three villages as a precautionary measure as the death toll in this Konkan belt rose to 180 with the recovery of 6 more bodies, police said.

About 800 people residing in Chochinde, Muthavali and Vanikond villages have been shifted to safer places due to fear of landslides, police said.

Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil [ Images ] and newly inducted minister Narayan Rane [ Images ] on Monday visited Mahad and addressed a public meeting.

Terrible Tuesday: Mumbai copes with a calamity

Patil said the region, which was affected by landslides, would be examined by a geologist and a concerte plan would be prepared for the future on the basis of the report.

So far, an assistance of Rs 7 crore had been distributed to flood-affected families, officials said.
