The Army, Navy and Air Force today launched relief and rescue operations in the wake of the fresh spell of rains in Maharashtra.
Three additional columns of the Army have been pressed into service in Satara, Sangli and Kolhapur in western Maharashtra, a defence department statement said.
Six heavy-duty army trucks are being provided to the local administration for the clearing operations in Kalina and
Andheri in north-western Mumbai, which have received continuous rainfall since last night.
In Jui village in Mahad, Raigad district, an army column has extricated 48 bodies of victims of a massive landslide that occurred following heavy rains last week.
The Navy has sent 11 rescue and diving teams along with inflatable lifeboats and other rescue material for rescue
and relief operations in Mumbai and surrounding areas. The teams have been kept at the disposal of the civic administration, the statement said.
Three teams have been deployed in Borivali in north Mumbai, while two teams are working in Air-India colony in Santacruz. The remaining teams have been kept on standby in Panvel, Raigad district, and at the police headquarters at Crawford market in south Mumbai.
In addition, five medical teams are kept on standby since yesterday at the Naval Hospital INS Asvini in the city for immediate medical assistance, the statement added.
