A medical examination of the 16-year, who was allegedly raped by a police constable on Thursday in Mumbai, has confirmed that she was indeed assaulted physically.

The girl from Chembur was taking a walk on the promenade along the Marine Drive with two boys, when Sunil More summoned them to a police chowky under the Marine Drive bridge.

After asking the boys to leave, he bolted the door and allegedly raped the girl.

Hearing her screams, passers-by forced their way into the chowky and showered blows on the cop.

"He always harasses the locals and he also used to come drunk for duty. Just because of his uniform, none of us confronted him," said Mrs. Y D'Souza, who works in a nearby building.

D'Souza also helped the girl inform her family of the incident.

"When a policemen, who is deputed for our security, does something like this, what are we to expect from others?" said D'Souza.

Though two constables are supposed to be on beat, More was alone on Thursday.

The police say that More has got into trouble before.

"Many cases have been reported against him earlier. Though it is true that his relatives are in the department, he has been reprimanded before for not reporting for duty and once for being drunk while on duty," said Joint Commissioner of Police, Law and Order, Ahmad Javed.

More has been remanded in police custody for three days.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil said the Mumbai Crime Branch will probe the incident.
