During her first visit to Kargil after the United Progressive Alliance assumed office, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday said that the peace process with Pakistan would not only continue, but also be strengthened.
"The UPA government will take every step to resolve the Kashmir issue through dialogue and reconciliation," she said at a rally.
The meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly was a step towards establishing peace in the region, she said.
The Congress chief said war between the two countries had created nothing but havoc.
Gandhi asked the People's Democratic Party-led Jammu and Kashmir government, in which the Congress is a major partner, to take special care of those along the border.
She also hailed the valour of the troops deployed in the region and said the entire country was proud of them.
