Manipur gets Rs 200 cr for development

October 26, 2004 17:05 IST

The Centre on Tuesday sanctioned Rs 200 crore for development projects in Manipur.

The decision was taken after Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh called on Union Minister for Development of the Northeast, P R Kyndiah, in New Delhi [ Images ].

"The special funds for Manipur will be used for projects relating to water supply, education, power, health, transport and communication," Kyndiah said.

He said his ministry was working on a plan to bring peace to the Northeast through development and employment generation.

"We have analysed a number of schemes and projects, which will go a long way in achieving this objective," he said.

Kyndiah said Manipur, which witnessed violent protests following the alleged custodial killing of Manorama Devi in July, was a "priority area" for his ministry, but added that it had adopted a principle of equitable distribution of funds among the north-eastern states.
