Nearly 600 empty and unused mortars and rockets were seized near Karjat town in Maharashtra, about 80 km from Mumbai, police said on Thursday.

The ammunition was found on Wednesday dumped in the Nawande nullah on the Mumbai-Goa highway, a few kilometres from Karjat town, under the jurisdiction of Khalapur police station in Raigad district of the Konkan region, police said adding they were packed in 20 gunny bags.

Police have asked the bomb detection and disposal squad to examine the seized consignment, which contained 461 empty mortars and rockets, 113 unused but expired ammunition and some steel spare parts of four-wheelers.

Police did not rule out the possibility that the consignment could have been deserted in wake of the police probe into recent seizures of ammunition in various places near Mumbai.

In the last 15 days, rockets and other ammunition has been found in metal scrap at various places in India.
