Attacking the government decision to disband the Phukan Commission probing the Tehelka scam, BJP on Monday alleged it amounted to "gross miscarriage of justice".
The party termed the government move as the second attempt to divert attention from the issue of 'tainted ministers'. "The decision is politically-motivated and BJP criticises it," party general secretary and former law minister Arun Jaitley said after the government announced the decision.
Pointing out that the Phukan Commission had already submitted one report, Jaitley questioned whether if there were some findings that the government wanted to "reverse through the CBI."
Raking up the issue of "large number of tainted ministers" in the Union government, he alleged that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the government had been trying to evade answers.
"They tried to sidetrack the issue by reviving an old case against Uma Bharti, but that proved costly for the government," Jaitley alleged.
Insisting that it was unprecedented that the term of a commission had not been extended, he said, "The decision taken due to political reasons amounts to gross miscarriage of justice."
"The Congress and the United Progressive Alliance government appear to have accepted virtually that the allegations (against NDA leaders) are false and not sustainable and so have scrapped the commission," he said.
