A person believed to be involved in the murder of Sankararaman, which led to the arrest of Kanchi Shankaracharya, on Wednesday surrendered before a court in suburban Alanthur and was remanded to judicial custody.

Police said with the surrender of Ambikapathy, 18 people have been held in connection with the murder of Sankararaman, manager of the Varadaraja Perumal temple on September 3.

Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi is the prime accused in the case. The Shankaracharya is presently lodged in the central prison at Vellore after being remanded to judicial custody till November 26.

Police said after Ambikapathy surrendered, the Alanthur judicial magistrate Paramarajan remanded him to 15-days judicial custody. Later, he was lodged in the central prison here.

Police had produced two others, taken into custody in connection with the case, before the Kancheepuram First Class
Judicial G Uttamarajan yesterday for remand extension.

The court extended the judicial custody of one of the accused, Rajni, and extended the police custody by two days of
the other accused, following a petition by police.
