At least 50 shops were destroyed and goods worth crores of rupees damaged in a major fire at a shopping complex in Jaipur on Saturday, a senior police official said.

The fire started in the basement of Gaurav Towers in Malviya Nagar area around 0630 IST, Superintendent of Police Sanjay Agarwal told reporters.

About 100 fire-tenders were pressed into service and assistance from the army and air force was sought to douse the fire, the SP, who is supervising the rescue operations, said.

District Collector Sudhanshu Pant told reporters that property and goods worth crores of rupees could have perished in the fire. It would take months to restore business in the complex, he said.

The reason of the fire could not be ascertained, he said, adding it could probably be due to a short-circuit.
