Zaheera Sheikh, the prime witness in the Best Bakery case, has written a letter to the National Commission for Women seeking protection.
"It is a brief letter of appeal and she has written that since the commission has been redressing the problems of women, we can understand her suffering," NCW chairperson Poornima Advani told PTI over phone from Mumbai.
The letter, written in Gujarati, was sent by Zaheera through her lawyer on Monday.
Advani said the commission has taken cognisance of the appeal and will do the needful.
Zaheera had moved the National Commission for Minorities on Monday seeking help.
She made a volte-face last week in the Best Bakery case, accusing social activist Teesta Setalvad of "pressuring" her to name innocent persons as accused.
She is currently housed at an undisclosed location in Ahmedabad under police protection.
Meanwhile, Advani, scheduled to tour the Gujarat capital on Wednesday as part of the commission's state visits, is expected to take up the issue during her meetings with the state government officials, including the chief secretary.
