A police constable has been arrested for his alleged involvement in the failed jailbreak bid of notorious serial killer Charles Sobhraj.

Surya Khanal was arrested on Friday after the police were tipped-off about his alleged involvement in Sobhraj's attempt to escape from the central jail in Kathmandu, Deputy Superintendent of Police Ganesh K C said on Saturday.

Nepal police are looking for two more people, who were also allegedly involved in Sobhraj's plans to escape possibly to India, government-run Gorkhapatra daily reported.

After the police found the 61-year-old Sobhraj illegally using a laptop, UTL telephone and a mobile phone in the jail, a three-member inquiry committee was formed to investigate the matter.

Sobhraj, known as 'the serpent' because of his talent for disguise, had also revealed his plans to escape from the Kathmandu central jail to his friends outside Nepal through e-mails.

Sobhraj is serving a life sentence in the jail for the past three months after he was arrested from a Kathmandu casino in August last year for murdering an American tourist three decades ago. The Kathmandu District Court had convicted him for the murder.

Sobhraj, who has been involved in a number of criminal cases, including murder, looting and drug trafficking, had recently filed an appeal with the Nepal's Appellate Court against his sentence.
