Militants seize house in north Kashmir

Security forces late Wednesday surrounded Asham village in north Kashmir where a group of militants have seized a house after vacating a school building in which 500 children were present.

Police said the militants had ambushed an army convoy passing through the village late in the afternoon.

The militants hurled grenades and sprayed bullets from their automatic weapons on the passing convoy.

When troops returned the fire, the militants took refuge in a nearby school. Security forces immediately surrounded the school building. The militants then fled the premises and seized a nearby house.

One person was injured and hospitalized after a brief exchange of fire.

Senior security personnel have rushed to the spot.
