In further revelations relating to the expose of some army personnel faking killings of enemy soldiers on the world's highest battlefield Siachen glacier, reports Saturday came out that the officer in the eye of the storm, Major Surinder Singh, had been recommended by his commanding officer for a Vir Chakra which was later sought to be changed to a Sena Medal.

However, the move was nipped in the bud, when the Commander of the 102 Brigade, Brigadier H S Bedi, put his foot down and did not forward the medal citation to the higher command chain.

The Brigade Commander, in fact, pulled up the Gorkha Battalion Commander for not informing him about details of the Major's "operational misdemeanour".

The 14 Corp Commander Lieutenant General Arvind Sharma, in his directions issued February 3, on submission of the court of inquiry report, has directed disciplinary action against Major Singh for submitting a false film on fake kills and against Colonel K D Singh for failing to inform senior officers of the Major faking encounters.

The corp commander also cited instances coming to light of the Colonel creating unauthorised funds and taking blank railway leave warrants.

A defence ministry statement Friday had only spoken of administrative action being initiated against the Battalion Commander Colonel K D Singh and his Adjuntant Major Rohit Lama.

But according to post-Court of Inquiry directions issued by the Corp Commander, General Sharma has also directed that disciplinary action be taken against Lama for passing a classified document to Major Surinder Singh, photo copies of which were later produced in civil court.

"As the noose of severe disciplinary action tightened against him the Major had sought to indulge in highly objectionable actions" army sources said.
