SGPC chief G S Tohra suffers heart attack

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president Gurcharan Singh Tohra was on Thursday afternoon admitted to the Escorts Hospital in Amritsar following a massive heart attack.

Tohra was supervising the cleaning of the pond adjoining the Golden Temple, for which several hundred people had gathered, including some from abroad.

"He complained of chest pain around 2.30 in the afternoon. A team of doctors comprising of Dr U S Dhariwal, Dr Amrik Singh and Dr Kultar Singh attended to him at the Guru Ram Dass Hospital. While he was being shifted to Escorts in an ambulance, he suffered another attack. He is now on a life support system," Manjit Singh Calcutta told rediff.com.

Renowned heart surgeon Dr Naresh Trehan is expected to fly down from Delhi along with a team of doctors and, his health permitting, to shift him to Delhi.

Dr H P Singh of the Escorts Hospital is in touch with Dr Trehan.

Tohra along with former Punjab chief minister Prakash Singh Badal were expected to share the dais with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani on Friday at a joint public meeting in Gole Bagh in Amritsar.
