Council of Architecture
The Council of Architecture is a statutory body constituted by the ministry of human resources development, Government of India, under the Architects Act, 1972.
The Council has the mandate to regulate the standards of architectural education and profession of an architect under the various provisions of the Architects Act, 1972 (a special central Act) and the respective rules, regulations and norms framed therefore. To practice as an architect with the government or to teach, it is mandatory to register with the Council.
The Council has issued a public notice to students and architecture courses:
Students
Minimum eligibility for admission to 1st year B. Arch: No candidate shall be admitted to the architecture course unless s/he has passed an examination at the end of the new 10+2 scheme of Senior School Certificate Examination, or equivalent, with Mathematics and English as subjects of examination at the 10+2 level with minimum 50 per cent marks in aggregate, and subject to an Aptitude Test.
No lateral admission: There is no provision for lateral admission to the 2nd year or at any other stage of the 5-year course in Architecture.
Institutions
Inspection of existing Colleges/Institutions: The Council oversees the maintenance of minimum standards of architectural education by way of inspections. The authorities concerned and schools are hereby informed not to admit students to the in academic session 2004-2005 in excess of the given intake for academic session 2003-2004 unless advised to do so by the Council of Architecture, upon conducting inspections in the current session.
Introduction of new courses/Increase in intake: Any institution desirous of introducing a 5-year degree course in Architecture or increase its existing intake or introducing an additional course is advised to get the feasibility of its proposal evaluated by the Council.
Relevant orders of the Madras high court: The Madras high court has restrained the All India Council for Technical Education from acting in any manner in interfering with the administration of the existing and establishment of the new institutions by imparting, education in architecture as they are governed by the Architects Act, 1972 and its regulations pending disposal of the writ petition no 36520 and other similar writ petitions.
The high court has also restrained CBSE from conducting entrance examinations for the course of Bachelor of Architecture by prescribing entry-level qualification other than what has been prescribed by the Council of Architecture pending the disposal of the case.
