A former vice-chancellor of Visva-Bharati University, from where Rabindranath Tagore's Nobel Prize medal was stolen, has been arrested for involvement in a fake certificates racket.

Police arrested Dilip Sinha for assisting in a racket that faked certificates to get people jobs in the university.

Sinha had attested forged educational certificates that had given "several" people jobs in Visva-Bharati, the police said.

Additional Director General (CID) R K Mohanty told reporters on Friday that Sinha had been arrested along with another university employee.

Police investigating the theft of Tagore's Nobel medal and other memorabilia on March 25 came across evidence that several appointments were made on the basis of fake certificates during Sinha's tenure.

The former VC, arrested Thursday, faced a slew of protests from students and some sections of the employees on various issues when he held office.
