Former prime minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee, under attack for demanding the sacking of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for his mishandling of Gujarat riots, on Wednesday said it is for the first time in his life he has been targeted in this manner.

After releasing a book on his life brought out by a pro-Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh publication house, Vajpayee said: "I have been under attack [from my own people] for the first time in my life. This book will definitely help me deal with this."
Vajpayee has been facing severe criticism for listing Gujarat riots as one the reasons for the party's defeat in the last general election. There have been demands that he should make way for Lal Kishenchand Advani to lead the party.
