The Election Commission on Wednesday night announced a fresh schedule for elections to fill 65 vacancies in Rajya Sabha on June 28, hours after the Supreme Court vacated its last week's stay with a rider that the polls would be subject to its final decision on the petition challenging open ballot system and doing away with the domicile status of the candidate.
Under the revised notification to be issued on Thursday, last date for filing nominations would be on June 17 and the scrutiny the following day. The last date for withdrawal of nominations would be on June 21.
The EC recalled that the Supreme Court while vacating its stay stated in its order that the election of members shall be subject to the outcome of the writ petitions or orders that may be passed at the time of final disposal of the case.
The court has asked each candidate seeking election to the Rajya Sabha to clearly indicate, in Form 2C under Rule Four of the Conduct of Election Rules, the state in which he/she is resident and serial number and part number of the electoral roll of the assembly/parliamentary constituency.
