Differences arose between the Gujarat and Maharashtra governments over the appointment of a Public Prosecutor in the Best Bakery case, the re-trial for which began in Mumbai on Monday.
The re-trial was ordered by the Supreme Court, which also specified that it be held outside Gujarat after some witnesses complained that the Gujarat police has been harassing them.
On Monday, the Maharashtra government told the court that it would appoint the public prosecutor citing the SC order. The Gujarat government has objected to this demand.

The counsel for the witnesses pleaded that the court issue arrest warrants in the name of the 15 accused who are not in custody. However, the court turned down the request saying a Gujarat court had already issued warrants against them.
Four accused, one of whom has obtained bail, were present in court on Monday. Two more accused were arrested in the last 24 hours.
The next date of hearing has been fixed for June 21.
