The Gujarat government Monday opposed the Centre's proposal to repeal the Prevention Of Terrorist Activities Act, saying it could lead to a surge in terrorsm in the country.

"The step could open the floodgates for terrorist activities," Law Minister Ashok Bhatt told reporters.

"The Congress has to decide how it wants to counter the menace of terrorism, but it should not be done at the cost of the nation's security," he said.

Asked whether the state government was contemplating framing a law if POTA was repealed, the minister said any decision would be taken only after considering the details of the draft bill presented in Parliament.

The Gujarat assembly had passed the Gujarat Control of Organised Crime Act, framed on the lines of the stringent law in neighbouring Maharashtra.
