Suspecting the involvement of Al Qaeda and its affiliated militant groups in the attempt on Prime Minister-designate Shoukat Aziz on Friday, Pakistan police on Saturday focussed their investigations on determining the identity of the suicide bomber, whose head was recovered intact from the site of the blast.
Aziz, 55, currently the finance minister, survived the blast, while his driver and seven others, including the bomber, were killed and over 30 others were injured.
The attack took place when Aziz was leaving the venue of a public meeting in Fateh Jhang, west of Islamabad.
The suicide attack, captured live on video, showed Aziz and a district official getting into his black Mercedes car after addressing the rally. The explosion occurred as his car was about to move out of the area.
Senior police officials said they are confident of a breakthrough in the case.
