Police in California's Irvine district have asked parents to check baby food jars for tampering after two containers of Gerber banana yoghurt were found contaminated with traces of ricin, a deadly poison.

Both jars were purchased from same grocery shop in May and June in California and had notes inside saying that the food had been contaminated.

The babies who ate the food out the jars were unharmed. The last incident occurred on June 16 and since then no other contaminated jar has been found. Police said the ricin was not concentrated enough to prove fatal, and could not say what what the motive was.

The New Jersey based company which produces the food and police asked parents to ensure that the jars have the pilfer proof seal when they buy them. In statement, the company has asked parents to listen for the pop on the lid seal when opening the jar.

However, the Irvine district authorities have warned that it is possible for a jar to make the popping sound even if it has been tampered with.

Ricin can be fatal if swallowed, inhaled or injected. A dose about the size of the head of a pin can kill an adult.
