Bharati, wife of Maninderpal Singh Kohli, prime suspect in the rape and murder of a 17-year-old British national, said she wants to meet her husband and hear from him whether he is guilty or not.

Bharati, 32, married Kohli last month after he introduced himself as Mike Davis, a volunteer with the Red Cross Society.

Kohli is now under judicial custody till July 29.

''Once he says he is innocent, eye to eye, it will boost me mentally, to wait for him till he is set free,'' she said in Siliguri on Friday.

She alleged the police were not allowing her to meet Kohli at the Kalimpong jail. "I don't know what is wrong with me. My common sense says a wife can meet her undertrial husband," she said.

Bharati's father, Oath Bahadur Das, alleged the police and administration were not allowing him to meet his son-in-law.

Das wanted to ask Kohli what would happen to his daughter if he was found innocent. ''He is only an accused, not a convict. I should be given a chance to meet my accused son-in-law. I am very much worried and rather confused about my daughter's fate,'' Das said.

The sub-divisional officer, Kalimpong, told reporters that if Bharati and Das wanted meet Kohli, they should follow the procedure and meet the trial judge.

Kohli will be handed over to Central Bureau of Investigation after maintaining formalities as per a decision of the sub-divisional judicial magistrate, Kalimpong, Hargobind Singh. A CBI team is expected to reach Kalimpong in a day or two, the police said.
