24 Indian ultras killed in Dhaka

At least 24 insurgents of different outfits of the Northeast were killed and 26 others injured in simultaneous attacks by unidentified gunmen on four urban hideouts in Dhaka, capital of neighbouring Bangladesh, Tripura's Director General of Police G M Srivastav said in Agartala on Sunday.

Intelligence inputs received from Dhaka suggest that the attacks took place in two hideouts in Segun Bagicha and one each in Dhanmundi and Shyamali, posh residential areas of the city, at around 7pm Bangladesh time on Saturday, he said.

Ultras of the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), People's Liberation Army (PLA) of Manipur, All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) might have suffered the casualties.

Members of various outfits were supposed to meet at a secret place on Saturday night but the raids were carried out before that. Srivastav could not identify who had carried out the raids.

The chief ministers of North-East including Manik Sarkar (Tripura) and Tarun Gogoi (Assam) had long been demanding that the Centre should take up with Bangladesh the issue of its soil bring used by Indian insurgents to launch subversive activities in the Northeast.

The development has caused an alert to be sounded on the Indo-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya. Inspector-general of BSF's Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and Nagaland frontier, headquartered in Shillong,

S C Srivastava told PTI, "We have already alerted the border outposts after the killing."

Meghalaya has a 423km border with Bangladesh out of which 195km is fenced.
