Last updated on: July 16, 2004 15:43 IST

Widespread violence was reported in Imphal when several women defied indefinite curfew and attempted to take out a procession to protest against the death of Th Manorama Devi at the hands of Assam Rifles personnel, official sources said on Friday.

Despite a downpour, mobs tried to break down security barricades in curfew-bound areas to take out a procession in Imphal town. Stoning, burning of tyres, blockade of roads to prevent movement of security vehicles were reported from various parts of curfew-bound areas.

Police burst tear gas shells and fired rubber bullets to disperse crowds at various places, including Kongba, Sangangpham, Tera, Uchekon and some on the outskirts of the state capital.
