Impressed by the courage shown by the women of Ninua village in Chhattisgarh's Raipur district to ensure closure of liquor dens in their village, National Commission for Women chairperson Poornima Advani on Friday visited the area to congratulate them on their achievement.
The women had taken out processions in large numbers and organised road blocks, and agreed to stop the protest only after an assurance was given to them by the administration that the liquor vends would be closed.
Speaking about her two-day visit to Chattisgarh on Friday, Advani said the story of their feat stood out among the tales of discrimination and violence against women that the Commission gets to hear every day.
In a statement in Delhi after her return, she said it was nice to know that the women had received cooperation from police in their endeavour.
The NCW chairperson, who had come to know about the success story from some of the participating women, said, "I would make it a point to speak about the women of Ninua in all my public meetings."
Among other things, the Chhattisgarh government has been directed to increase the number of women police stations. If that is not possible, all the police stations should have a section to be headed by women police officers.
She sought more mahila lok adalats, both outside and inside jail premises, to reduce the number of undertrials.
Advani said a review had revealed that there were cases of girl students dropping out in high school levels due to lack of toilets in the educational institutes. She sought proper infrastructure in the school premises.
