The Patna high court today stayed for two months the arrest of film actor Sunny Deol in a cheating case after he deposited Rs 13 lakh in the court.

Hearing a bail petition filed by Deol, Justice M L Visa stayed the arrest of the actor, who is also the director of Vijeta Film Company, for two months after he deposited a demand draft for Rs 13 lakh in the court to be given to the complainant.

The court directed that no coercive action should be initiated against Deol in the interim period of two months when the matter would come up for hearing.

A Hajipur-based film distributor, Arvind Kumar, had filed a case in a Vaishali district court in March last alleging that Deol's film company had not returned Rs 20 lakh that it had taken in return for granting him the distribution rights for the movie Gandhi. The film could not be completed and Kumar's money was not refunded despite several notices.

Earlier, Vaishali district and sessions judge Devi Dayal Prasad had on June 22 last rejected Deol's bail plea. Deol's counsel told the court that negotiations were on with Kumar over the remaining Rs 7 lakh.

On the direction of the Vaishali court, a complaint was filed against Deol's company at police station in Hajipur on March 20.

Later, the police sought a non-bailable warrant to arrest Deol from Chief Judicial Magistrate Ram Chandra Das in Vaishali, and which was issued on May 26.
