Eleven children died and 68 others were taken ill after having 'prasad' at a temple in Bihar's Vaishali district, Sub-Divisional Officer (Hajipur) R K Singh said in Hajipur on Monday.

The children had complained of nausea and vomiting after taking the prasad at a temple in Birangabad under Raghopur block on the occasion of Guru Purnima on Friday.

While seven children died due to gastro-intestinal problems on Sunday night, four lost their lives on Monday during treatment.

All those who died belonged to Ibrahimabad village of the district represented by Chief Minister Rabri Devi. The 68 affected people, mostly belonging to Ibrahimabad, Birangabad, Begiaganj, Jagdishpur, and Mohanpur villages were undergoing treatment at hospitals in Raghavpur and Satuha.

Medical teams under the supervision of the Vaishali district civil surgeon were attending to the affected persons.

The SDO said efforts were on to locate others who might have been taken ill after consuming the prasad.

District Magistrate H R Srinivasan has ordered a high-level inquiry into the deaths.
