Woman gives birth to grandkids

An Indian woman has given birth to her own grandchildren, following a deal with her London-based daughter and son-in-law.

The couple, who have chosen to remain anonymous, had been told by doctors they could not have children.

The reason was that the wife had a rare congenital condition, known as Rokitansky Syndrome, which does not allow the uterus to develop normally.

Undeterred, the couple decided to go in for IVF treatment to produce an embryo that could be implanted in their mother's womb.

Relatives in Gujarat encouraged the couple to pursue the procedure, despite a predictable outcry from certain sections of the society.

In London, the Indian IVF specialist who encouraged the couple to go through with the procedure has been quoted as saying, "They are very happy. They don't feel there is anything wrong with what has happened. They wanted children so badly and could not find anyone else to help them."

Dr Nayana Patel from Gujarat told London's Evening Standard newspaper, "It suddenly struck me… why couldn't a member from the same family become a surrogate mother? When I first spoke to the young woman's mother, her reaction was one of horror.

"She said, 'What will people say?' She was very apprehensive about other people's reactions."

The twins' grandfather is quoted as saying, "There were tears from my daughter-in-law, but they were tears of joy."
