Panic gripped the coastal belts of Kerala's southern districts on Monday night following reports of sea water rising in Alappuzha, Kollam districts and coastal areas of the state capital Thiruvananthapuram.
A Kollam report said the sea had surged half a kilometre into the shore.
In some places police made announcements asking people to move to safer places.
Experts at the Centre for Earth Science Studies in Thiruvananthapuram had on Monday night warned of the possibilities of sea surges as an aftermath or after-shock of Sunday's earthquake.
Thiruvananthapuram District Collector Tinku Biswal said people from Poonthura, Anjuthengu and Kadinamkulam areas were evacuated to safer places.
Police said an alert has been sounded along the entire coastal belt of the state to move people to safer places.
No casualty or damage to property has so far been reported from anywhere.
Authorities in the neighbouring country of Sri Lanka too have warned that some more tsunamis were on their way.
