'All weather passenger vessel' MV Bharat Seema set sail from Kochi to Lakshadweep on Sunday with 360 passengers, even as the territorial administration cancelled the journey of two other vessels following warning of high tidal waves in the Arabian Sea due to tremors that hit South East and South Asia.
Lakshadweep administration sources in Kochi said MV Bharat Seema had set sail for the islands by around 1300 IST, just before the weather office's warning stating that the sea would be disturbed due to the tidal waves, was received.
Administration sources at Kavaratti told PTI that the ship's captain has been informed that the sea could be dangerous between 1000 and 2030 IST due to the tidal waves.
The captain can take a decision whether to proceed to the islands or return to Kochi, the sources added.
Meanwhile, the administration cancelled the journey of M V Ammindivi to the islands. About 121 passengers were to sail to Lakshadweep in the ship, which will now expected to sail on Monday forenoon, if weather permits.
M V Dweep Sethu, scheduled to leave from Kozhikode for the islands, has also been cancelled.
All inter-island ferry services have been suspended.
In Androth Island, huge tidal waves lashed the coastal area on Sunday morning. There was no casualty or injury but copra, kept on the beach for drying, was washed away.
The waves had reached the beach defying a breakwater, constructed recently to block huge tidal waves.
