Former prime minister P V Narasimha Rao's condition is stable.
Rao is undergoing treatment for heart problems at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi, and has responded well to treatment, a hospital press release said on Sunday.
The 83-year-old leader, who was admitted to AIIMS on December 9 following breathlessness, is now off ventilatory support and is breathing "comfortably".
Rao is fully conscious and his dependence on medicines has also decreased. But he will remain in intensive care as he is still on partial support for his heart and kidney functions.
His vital functions are presently "well maintained" with the support and doctors hope that he would regain function on his own, the release said.
The octogenarian had suffered severe disturbances in heart beats on Saturday last after which he was put on a temporary pacemaker.
The Congress leader has been suffering from problems related to diabetes, coronary heart and vascular diseases, besides pulmonary fibrosis.
