Park Street, one of the landmarks of Kolkata, was on Saturday rechristened Mother Teresa Sarani by Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee.
"There is no alternative to Mother Teresa. She was a miracle herself, a super-human being. Her ideal of selfless service should be ours to follow," Banerjee said before unveiling the plaque to announce the renaming.
Banerjee recalled her personal association with Mother and thanked her party-controlled Kolkata Municipal Corporation for renaming Park Street.
Inaugurating the bronze bust of the Mother, Missionaries of Charity superior general Sister Nirmala thanked the KMC and the people of Kolkata, saying this was the right way of paying tribute to a great soul.
"Mother had been here since the age of 18. She made this city her home. We ask her to bless us and pray for us so that the spirit of love dwells in us and bring love and joy," she said.
