The mobile phone of Rashtriya Janata Dal Member of Parliament from Madhepura, Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, was seized during a raid on Beur Central Jail in Patna on Wednesday.

The search was part of a wider raid on all Bihar jails and offices of prison officials, conducted on the Patna high court's order.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate of Patna, Rajendra Tiwari, deputed by the District and Sessions Judge, Shyam Kishore Sharma, was present during the search.

The HC had ordered the raid to be conducted under the supervision of the district and sessions judge.

Pappu Yadav is in the jail in connection with the murder of Communist Party of India-Marxist legislator Ajit Sarkar in 1998.

He was in controversy recently when a large number of his supporters illegally went to visit him in jail and quarrelled with the jail staff.

The Supreme Court had ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the incident and instructed the inspector general of prisons to submit a report on or before December 13.

Meanwhile, a report from Gaya said that during the raid on Gaya Central Jail today, a mobile phone, two knives and a packet of condom were seized.

Gaya Chief Judicial Magistrate V K Mandal supervised the raid, sources said.
