The Central Bureau of Investigation on Monday registered cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act against former Samata Party chief Jaya Jaitley and former Bharatiya Janata Party president Bangaru Laxman in connection with the Tehelka defence expose.

The CBI has charged Laxman and his personal staff with accepting bribe and entering into a criminal conspiracy.

Jaya Jaitley has also been booked for accepting bribe, CBI sources said.

Tehelka reporters, posing as arms dealers, in a sting operation had caught on camera politicians and defence officials accepting and demanding bribes.

The United Progressive Alliance government recently scrapped the Phukan Commission of Inquiry constituted by the previous National Democratic Alliance regime to look into the scandal and handed over the case to the CBI.

None of the Tehelka employees have been named in the FIRs.
